Applicants may be accepted into HKIT in one of the following categories:

Individuals who:
■ Are holders of an Accredited Degree (Major in Translation and Interpretation) at a Greater China tertiary institution with good academic results; OR
➢ Accredited Degree (Major in Translation and Interpretation)

➢ Good academic result means that the applicant is required to have passed the course with a minimum overall average grade of B (80/100) and a minimum of B+ (85/100) in the practical components of translation or interpreting courses. The applicant who fails to achieve a good academic result but has at least 1 year of full-time employment as a translator or interpreter within an organisation that provides supervision and professional development will be accessed on a case-by-case basis.
■ Are holders of a Recognised Degree (Major in Translation and Interpretation) from an overseas tertiary institution; OR
➢ The HKIT is developing its list of Recognised Degree. An overseas degree will be accessed on a case-by-case basis. You are encouraged to submit your application.
■ Are holders of Recognised Industry Qualification or Membership; OR
➢ Recognised Industry Qualification
● ATA-Certified Translator;
● China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI); or
● NAATI Certified Translator, Certified Interpreter, Certified Specialist, Health/Legal/Conference Interpreter.
➢ Recognised Membership
● Equivalent professional qualification from members of FIT at the Council’s discretion.
■ Have passed the HKIT Qualified Translator / Interpreter Exam; OR
➢ The HKIT is developing its Qualified Translator / Interpreter Exam with stakeholders from the industry.
■ Other equivalent qualifications and/or experience may be considered at the Council’s discretion.
➢ substantial published translation work, with an ISBN, which acknowledges the name of the translator;
➢ at least 3 years of full-time employment as a translator or interpreter within an organisation that provides supervision and professional development; or
➢ in exceptional cases, well-documented evidence of at least 3 years of regular and extensive work as a self-employed translator or interpreter.
The HKIT Honorary Fellowship and HKIT Fellowship are intended for individuals who have made a distinguished contribution to the translation community. Fellowships are by nomination and approval of the Council.
